It sounds like a specimen from the wuxia genre, about martial arts warriors in ancient China, rather than the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and plays out like one too. Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings includes throwbacks to other films in the ever-expanding superhero franchise as well as a prominent cameo by a Marvel character. But at heart, the newest MCU production is a classic battle of fisticuffs and wills.

Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton, one of the American indie talents to be hoovered up by Marvel Studios, largely sticks to the template. Cretton, who has written the 132-minute film movie along with Dave Callaham, Andrew Lanham, moves smoothly between time periods and continents before tackling a typically Asian question: does daddy always know best?

Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) has been in hiding for ten years from his authoritarian father Wenwu (Tony Leung). The leader of the Ten Rings organisation and the wearer of the magically endowed orbs that circle his arms, Wenwu likes to be in control at all times.

Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung and Malaysian action star Michelle Yeoh – both of whom have appeared in martial arts films – join Asian talent from Hollywood for an adventure that involves time travel, parallel realms of power and magic, dragons and a relatable debate about the weight of expectation placed by father on son.

Prepare to be blown away by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Marvel movie with top-tier action scenes and brilliant characters. Filled with dialogue that perfectly walks the line between witty, impactful and humorous, “Shang-Chi” is a sturdy stand-alone film that is delightful no matter an audience member’s knowledge of the Marvel franchise.

Shang-Chi, (Simu Liu) an ex-assassin hiding away in San Francisco under the name Shaun, is working as a valet with his best friend Katy (Awkwafina). Their life is thrown into mayhem when Shang-Chi’s father Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung Chie-Wai) — the founder of the international crime syndicate the “Ten Rings” — sends his soldiers after Shang-Chi. This opens the door to Shang-Chi’s horrendous past of being trained as an assassin since the age of seven. Now, he must attempt to protect his family as well as uncover and foil the true motives of his father. In order to save the world, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past or become defined by it.

“Shang-Chi” is composed of the most gripping action sequences created by Marvel in years. The choreography, stunts, visual effects and cinematography of the fight scenes are newfangled, launching the audience into physical conflicts unlike anything ever seen. The smaller level fights between Shang-Chi and other characters have a large emphasis on the environment. They explore the impact of the location on a fight scene and exceed expectations by having captivating sequences. These elaborate sequences occur in multiple high intensity settings, like on an out of control bus and on the scaffolding attached to the side of a skyscraper in Macau. The large ensemble fight sequences feel like a beautiful dance as the camera delicately jumps between the main cast of characters. This allows for the viewer to admire the action but not become overwhelmed by it

It plays to the gallery, it adheres to all the stereotypes and it shows how the west perceives Asians and their mystic laws but Marvel Cinematic Universe' new film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings' is stunning and all things awesome.

Canadian-Chinese actor Simu Liu takes on the mantle of Marvel's first Asian superhero in Destin Daniel Cretton's film which is the first solo film that introduces a new superhero into the already eclectic universe that Marvel has created in the past decade.

Complete with humour, jaw-dropping action stunts merged with Asian mysticism,  'Shang-Chi' is the perfect film to watch on the big screen after a long hiatus thanks to the pandemic.

The two are no match to their father's army of warriors and soon the two are taken to their home in Macau. Their father Wenwu(Tony Leung) has been the keeper of the Ten Rings for thousands of years and wields immense power thanks to it. He now wants to use the rings to burn down a village Ta Lo- which has mystical powers and safeguards the universe from evil forces. Wenwu believes that the village has held his wife Ying Li captive- who is long dead. Wenwu brings back his estranged children to bring his family together.
