So many firsts, so much to say and not a single area in which this web series misses its flair. Jim Sarbh and Ishwak Singh led ‘Rocket Boys’ is a masterclass in how you paint a picture from an era that has been forgotten but cannot be erased – the time when India was carving its own destiny, fighting the British empire off its back and making way for a new, youthful democracy. SonyLIV delivers yet another binge worthy show after ‘Scam 1992’ that is truly Indian and will fill you with pride knowing about these two earnest-in-their-approach scientists who led the way for India to become a nuclear power.

It’s 1962 and we see a bunch of scientists arguing over a plan of action at the Department of Atomic Energy, Bombay (now Mumbai), as India is in a state of war with China. It is in this room where we meet nuclear physicist Homi Bhabha, played by Jim Sarbh, and space researcher Vikram Sarabhai, essayed by Ishwak Singh. While Bhabha argues in favour of developing India’s first atom bomb for national security, Sarabhai insists on a diplomatic approach. This tension-filled sequence gives the series an impressive beginning.

It’s true that Bhabha and Sarabhai had contradictory ideas about building India’s scientific base. But the two had a common mission - our country’s progress. This is what brought them together as mentor and mentee. Sarabhai, who was called the ‘lunatic Brown kid’ in college, looked up to Bhabha as the ‘Renaissance man’ behind the Cosmic Ray Research Unit at Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science. The two started working together, fought the system and British bureaucracy to attain their goals.

Two men. One takes the more traditional route of running up the stairs, one floor at a time, and the other one, climbs up through the ledges, which is a faster way to get to the top, sure, but a bit more dangerous one. The aim of both of them is to replace the Union Jack with the Indian Tricolour at the top of Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.

The event took place in 1942, and the two men are Dr Homi J. Bhabha and Dr Vikram Sarabhai, as shown in ‘Rocket Boys’, which chronicles the journey of, arguably, two of India's greatest ever icons, about whom the country knew little, while also humanising them at the same time, making it a wonderful biopic drama that never stops inspiring.

There is only a bit of that here. Come to think of it, the two specific terms I remember right away from this show - predestination, and Nash equilibrium - belong more to theology and economics, respectively.

Might even be fair to say Rocket Boys belongs more to precious institution-building, than science itself. To gauge its relevance, suffice it to know, at least two major research campuses continuing to make Indian science proud are within 30-km distance from where I'm writing this in Mumbai - Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and Tate Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

Both of which owe their existence to critical theorist Homi J Bhabha. This is his story. Along with Vikram Sarabhai's, who went on to set up India's space programme, best known to all as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Bhabha and Sarabhai being, according to this series, "mad scientists" in the inner circle of Jawaharlal Nehru. Who, in turn, was sworn to a modern, scientific temperament, for an independent republic he founded with committed compatriots, after the British left.

So this is, in a way, also the story of Nehru, and modern India. And yet, at no point, do the filmmakers behind this period series, with subtle but top-class production design, seem too overwhelmed by the task at hand.

There's tonnes of romance here, a lot of intrigue elsewhere, even some clock-ticking drama, and generally a lightness of touch, overall. Without once disrespecting the lay viewer's intelligence, which is a superpower of its own.

What does that give the show, foremost? A sure-footed sort of credibility as it charts the story of two seemingly remarkable men over about two and half decades - between the beginning of WWII (1940), and the end of the Indo-China war (1962). Which is to say that at least the events/anecdotes/characters in the script do not look like they've been altogether researched from WhatsAapp University.

Whether that be the maverick scientist Bhabha - so close to Nehru that he called him Bhai, and treated him as an equal - bringing over truckloads of coal to a public reception, in order to explain the comparative value of uranium to India's first PM. Playing violin at the party thereafter, while Nehru plays the piano.

At times Jim Sarabh seems to be channelling Benedict Cumberbatch, but besides that, he is flawless. The classiness and confidence that he oozes through the part without going overboard or too dramatic is a treat to watch.

Ishwak Singh is consistent from the start and delivers the required with ease. He has more emotions to deal with than Jim Sarabh, and he does them all comfortably. The character does take a back seat during the later parts of the show, but there is always a lingering presence due to the actor’s portrayal.

Analysis

Abhay Pannu directs Rocket Boys, a biopic of Dr Homi J Bhabha and Dr Vikram Sarabhai. As the promotions say, it is an incredible journey; there is enough material – all one has to do is get it right and not spoil it. Abhay Pannu, luckily, gets it right.

The first thing that catches our minds instantly is the cinematography and writing. Within the first few minutes of the first episode, this is clear. Soon, a strong conflict is set between the two leading men, and we are hooked.

The narrative then takes us back in time to the beginning of the friendship of Dr Homi Bhaba and Dr Vikram Sarabhai. As we get to know more about them, the performances too add to the impact. By the end of the first episode, we are entirely immersed in the world of Rocket Boys.

From then onwards, the narrative never slips until the other aspects of the lives of the two individuals take centre stage. The romance and subsequent marriage of Dr Vikram Sarabai is that diversion. There is a drama that we have seen countless times before. It is here that we feel the impact of the slow pace.
